Critically acclaimed 1st Lady of Afrobeats, May7ven, (real names May
Yemisi Odegbami) returns to her homeland, Nigeria, after years of
successfully taking on the UK music industry.
The Nigerian-born UK based singer-songwriter, dancer and producer,
May7ven, became the first independent Afrobeats artist to be A-listed on
UK Mainstream radio with her smash hit single, ‘TEN TEN’ which was
followed up by ‘HEY MR’ in early 2013. With spots on charts like the MTV
Base UK Top chart, MTV Top 100 Best Videos including 5 European charts
and over 20 music video charts across Africa, her press prowess has led
to great reviews on DJ World Charts, Evening Standard newspaper, Voice,
Guardian, Eurostar Metropolitan and so many more.
Having supported in concerts music stars like Akon, P-Square, J.Holiday,
Joe, Ginuwine; lent her vocals to hit singles, albums and tours by Mary
J. Blige, Black Eyed Peas, Blu Cantrell, Beverly Knight, Jamelia and
bagged awards which include Best UK Afrobeats Artist at the BEFFTA
Awards 2012, Best Breakthrough Artist at the NEL Awards 2012, Best
Afrobeats Artist at the NUBBA Awards 2013 and a honorary award at the
Woman for Arica ceremony, it is quite obvious to say this 1st lady is
running at an unstoppable drive and is now one of the most sought
Afrobeats female voices in the scene. Her music style and videos paved
the way and influenced the new resurgence of Nigerian female artists now
combining R&B with Afrobeats.
Referred by the UK’s Evening Standard newspaper as the “African Beyonce”, the “Queen of Afrobeats” by Mobo Awards (www.moboawards.com),
May7ven describes her style as “AFR&B” – African R&B/Afrobeats,
a total reflection of her biggest musical influences such as Michael
Jackson, Fela Kuti, Prince, Usher, Faith Evans and Karen Clark.
Grammy award-winning producer, Chris Stokes says, “May7ven is way ahead
of her time with the music, style and innovation. She is the artist to
watch”.
There is nothing conventional about MAY7VEN and collaborations with
music acts like Chingy, 2face, M.I, Davido, Iceprince, Wizkid, Alexandra
Burke on her soon-to-be launched EP and rehearsals already underway,
show this white-haired queen is more than prepared to rule the Nigerian
music scene with her energy, dance skills and most importantly, killer
vocals.
